If you’re like most people searching for a new monitor, you’ve probably wondered why gsync monitors are so darn expensive. Well, we wondered for a while too. G sync monitor prices can seem out of hand, with curved widescreen G Sync monitors going for nearly $1000.
The good news? We found some answers. 4 to be exact.

1. Nvidia Proprietary Technology
Gsync is proprietary technology owned by Nvidia. Monitor manufacturers pay a fee to Nvidia so they can use G-sync tech in their displays. G-sync itself requires dedicated hardware within the monitor to allow G-sync to work. The result? G sync monitor prices end up more expensive on average than non g-sync monitors because of this dedicated hardware requirement.
This isn’t always a bad thing, especially when quality control is easily monitored. Better quality control means more reliable monitors that consistently produce a better display experience. We can’t complain about that.
2. Nvidia's Strict Quality Control
In addition to the special hardware g sync monitors require, Nvidia also has a fairly strict approval process for their G sync displays.
In theory (and largely in practice) this means two things:
- You won’t find Gsync-capable monitors using entry-level quality LCD panels. This means better quality and more reliable panels from Gsync monitors.
- Because Nvidia has stricter controls & hardware components in each panel, Gsync monitors will on average be more expensive than their non gsync counterparts.
This is evident in why gsync monitors can sometimes have out of control prices. The good news? Some new comers and old players have consistently worked to bring prices down, including our favorite least expensive gsync monitor, Dell Gaming S2417DG.
3. Better Technology
Nvidia’s gsync tech was one of the first-to-market implementations of adaptive sync technology. Even more, Nvidia was the first to standardize proprietary technology around their monstrous video card market share. The result was Nvidia GPU users locked into one monitor type (gsync) if they wanted to take advantage of Nvidias monitor tech. AMD took a while to catch up. While AMD has closed the gap a lot, they’re still not quite there.
AMD’s Freesync implementation still suffers from a lack of overall quality consistency. Quality depends on the monitor – it can be poor, good, sometimes great, and other times? Really bad. Gsync is consistently great. Why? Because Nvidia is much more stringent on which panels & monitors they use their gsync technology in. The result is g sync monitors that look like this.
Also, Gsync alternatives work within a smaller FPS range, which means less opportunity to reduce screen tearing. Gsync works perfectly with whatever the max refresh rate of the panel is. Whether you’re at 30 FPS or 144 FPS, G-sync completely smooths out all stuttering & frames. As of 2018, the same cannot be said for Freesync.
Ultimately both technologies help to avoid screen tearing. They both do a good job. G-sync just goes one step further by allowing your FPS to fall below your monitor’s refresh rate. All while keeping frame rates smooth.
These technological reasons add to why gsync is so expensive.
Note: This isn’t a knock on Freesync. Freesync is a fantastic budget alternative to Nvidia’s G-sync tech, but it isn’t quite there on the higher-end premium scale just yet.
4. Nvidia's Target Audience
Nvidia says their G-sync tech aims toward the premium end of the monitor market. This includes 1440p, 4k, and 27″ Gsync monitors (and even 30+ inch monitors). Even more, Nvidia says they have no immediate or mid-term plans of tailoring their gsync technology for the mainstream. They believe charging more for a “better experience” is worth the cost. In our estimation, it’s hard to argue with Nvidia on this point.
Gsync is not for everyone. People on extreme budgets should shy away and look at Freesync alternatives. The good news, however, is that G sync has fantastic cheap alternatives on Amazon in 2018 that make them much more price-competitive. We strongly recommend taking a look at some of these G Sync monitors, read reviews, and judge for yourself if it’s worth it.
