Editor’s Note: The Summit series from Weber grill has every imaginable grilling feature you’d want and expect. Side burner, infrared technology, rotisserie burner, dedicated sear burner, a smoker box – the list goes on. In total, Weber’s Summit E-470 and S-470 (stainless steel) options come with 8 burners. The only other Weber grill with more burners is their Weber Summit 7470001 S-670.  Weber stands behind their Summit with a full 10-year warranty. The S-470 and E-470 is one of the best overall values for serious grillers right now in 2018.

It’s beautifully & intelligently built, and it’s effective in what’s it’s designed to do; cook better than any other gas grill you’ve used before. What Makes The Summit S-470 Special?

Weber’s Summit Summit S-470 sports some insanely beefy specs for it’s price. It’s everything you’d expect and more from a mid-level enthusiast gas grill. From it’s overall value, to it’s stainless steel design & styling, sturdy construction, and even heat distribution. There’s several important distinctions between the Summit series and other Weber models, mainly the Genesis (it’s closest priced competitor). For one, the 470 has an extra burner, an IR rotisserie burner (for searing steaks), and 580 square inches of cooking surface. If money is no object, the Summit 470 is unquestionably the way to go. It’s overall performance is exceptional.

If you’ve owned cheap grills in the past, you’ll know the issues with longevity, durability, uneven cooking – the list goes on. Summit doesn’t have any of these problems. The best part? If you like all the bells & whistles that come with a modern tech-oriented grill, the Summit has them. Lit dials, grill light, temperature control, and propane level reader to name a few.

Summit S470 - Important Features & Benefits

Burners – The S-470 has 4 main burners, each at 12,200 BTUs. These burners do a fairly incredible job heating quickly and staying hot. We’ve seen these burners get as high as 700 degrees.

12,000 BTU side burner

Sear & Side Burner – Summit’s 470 has a 10,600 BTU sear-burner in the center and a 12,000 BTU side-burner. The sear option is perfect for steaks – they really do an amazing job getting a good sear. The side burner’s low setting runs a little too hot for simmering, but it’s perfect for cooking side meals and multitasking.

Burner Tubes  Weber’s 470 burner tubes are made of high-grade stainless steel. They do a fairly incredible job capturing and keeping heat in it’s tubes for a very even heat distribution.

10,600 rear-mounted infrared rotisserie burner

Infrared Rotisserie Burner – Summit’s 10,600 BTU rear-mounted rotisserie burner is the one major cons we have with this grill. The problem? It doesn’t quite cover the entire length of 2 chickens, but it still does an ‘okay‘ job. Don’t purchase the Summit 470 for it’s rotisserie feature alone. unless you have smaller rotisserie demands than 2 chickens.

Cookbox and shroud

Cookbox & Shroud – The 470 cookbox is another favorite feature of ours. It’s extremely heavy & durable – made of cast aluminum. They’re especially good for proper heat circulation when food is cooking (whether using direct or indirect heat).

Flavorized Bars – Weber’s flavorized bar system is found on all Weber grills, including their Spirit & Genesis lines. They’re designed to catch drippings that smoke, sizzle, and rise up into the food. Anything that isn’t vaporized gets funneled into the burner tubes and down into the grease management system. Our favorite part? Weber’s flavorized bars have a 5-year warranty on them. If they rust or wear at any point in those 5 years, Weber will completely replace them (free of charge).

Grease Management – Weber’s grease management is simple and effective. It’s a grease tray & catch pan that are easy to clean. The tray slides out to clean, and the drop pan is disposable.

weber summit s 470 review - 9mm diameter stainless steel cooking grates
Stainless steel cooking grates

Cooking Grates – Weber’s cooking grates in their Summit 470 are stainless steel. They sear extremely well, and the stainless steel rods make a nice sear mark on whatever you cook on top.

Built-in Thermometer  Weber Summit’s built in thermometer does a fine job calculating temperature. It isn’t always accurate, but it does a good job compared to no thermometer.

LED Fuel Gauge – We particularly like this feature on the 470. It shows fuel levels in 5 increments to let you know when you’re getting low.

weber summit s 470 review - Smoker box
S 470 Smoker box

Smoker Box – The smoke box is perfect for people that enjoy cooking with wood chips. Like the rotisserie burner, however, the smoker box won’t do as good a job as a dedicated smoker grill. The good news? It still does a decent job smoking, with a 6800 BTU smoker burner. Our wish? We hope in the future Weber adds an option to remove the smoker box and add an additional (or larger) grate for more grilling space.

Warming Rack Size – 112 sq. inches.

Storage – Weber’s 470 storage is something all grillers love. It’s an enclosed cart with stainless steel doors, 6 tool holders, and a cookbook (which we found really handy even if it doesn’t have any rotisserie recipes). We strongly recommend taking good care of this storage space during the seasons. Grills with storage compartments may accumulate moisture (and eventually mold) over time if not properly cared for.

Summit S 470 - LP vs Natural Gas

Weber’s Summit S-470 comes in 2 options – their liquid propane & natural gas option. Their natural gas option is a little more expensive (not much, and only at the time of this post), but that’s normal for natural gas options in any gas grill. Their propane option takes a 20-pound LP tank (sold separately).

Verdict: The Weber Summit E 470 has all the same great features the S 470 has. The only difference is the exterior. The E-470 exterior is a matte-black color, while the S-470 is a pure stainless steel exterior. In our experience both models hold up equally well to all-weather conditions through all seasons
