Editor’s Note: The world’s best charcoal grill doesn’t seem to have a close second in 2018. Weber’s Performer series (particularly their best model on Amazon, the Performer Deluxe) is their best price-value charcoal grill available. It has everything you’d want, need, & expect in a capable charcoal grill package. Build quality, advanced gourmet BBQ system, large 363 sq. inches of grilling space… The Weber’s Performer series is a constant reminder of why the Weber name continues to remain synonyms with ‘charcoal grilling.’ Their top end model (Weber 15502001 Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill) is their best price-to-value option, coming with a convenient electronic push-start gas ignition that saves countless hours over the course of a year. Their middle of the line is the Weber 15402001 Performer Premium Charcoal Grill, and their no-frills option is the Weber 15301001 Performer Charcoal Grill. The best part? All 3 models are made in America (with globally sourced components). Continue below for a full review on all 3 Performer series model.

Performer Deluxe comes in 3 colors

Weber performer deluxe review - grill verdictVerdictWeber’s Performer Deluxe (found on Amazon) replaces the previous Performer Platinum grill in 2015. As of 2018, the Performer Platinum grill is completely discontinued. The new Performer Deluxe  combines the convenience of gas grills with the flavor & taste of charcoal (or wood) grilling. How? Weber’s electronic touch-n-go gas ignition system. It lights the charcoal (using propane) in under 5 minutes – all with the push of a button. It’s about a perfect charcoal grilling station you can get. It comes with two charcoal trays and an interchangeable center portion. This center portion is made of plated 22.5″ steel with hinged sides. These hinged sides allow you to easily replenish coal, with a removable round center. This removable round center allows you to use a Wok, Griddle, and even Pizza stone

Heating up charcoal with this grill is one of the main reasons why it’s so convenient. The Performer Deluxe uses an easy charcoal-lighter system (with propane). It holds a 1 lb propane tank, and with the push of a button your charcoal is ready to go.

Nylon Handle

The new Performer Deluxe has 2 char-baskets to hold and remove charcoal under the grate. These char-baskets allow you to create hot-direct and cooler-indirect zones depending on where you place them under the food. One of our favorite practical features? Their redesigned nylon lid handle (compared to their previous model). This nylon handle has a protective heat shield that will save you from burning your hand many times over whenever you lift the lid.

It beautifully cooks every summer BBQ grill food you expect. Chicken, steak, vegetables, all meats, all food, and it does it well; really well. The metal side-table is extremely convenient for prepping & removing food from the grill. It has a durable coating & can withstand all-weather conditions.

Built-In Thermometer

Other notable features of Weber’s Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill is their cart which has two large wheels, two locking casters and a large work surface. The table is just the right size to hold a cutting board, beer, sauce pans, grill tongs. It’s obviously very durable to the touch, heatproof, and heavy-gauge steel finished with a off-black color that’s easy to clean. The bottom line – it looks great. On the side is several built-in tool hooks, a removable LCD cook-timer and a built-in lid thermometer (which is surprisingly accurate).

There’s really nothing we can say about this grill that isn’t completely stellar. We can quibble on price, but this grill should easily last you 15-20 years with normal use & good care.

  • Extremely good charcoal grill value
  • No electric push-start gas ignition

Performer Premium comes in 3 colors:

Weber performer premium review - verdictVerdict: Weber Performer Premium (found on Amazon) was released in 2015, replacing Weber’s previous Performer Gold model (which is completely discontinued as of 2018). The Premium version has all the main features that make the Performance Deluxe so good, except one. The Weber Performance Premium doesn’t have the charcoal starter (which is why it’s priced $50 less at the time of this post). If convenience is your primary concern, we strongly recommend considering the Deluxe version. However, if you can wait a few extra minutes every time you grill, stick with the Premium version. Some people use a chimney starter, so in this case it wouldn’t be worth the upgrade.

Our take? We like the electronic ignition in conjunction with a propane tank (sold separately) of the Performer Deluxe. It shaves down start time & gets the grill hotter, much quicker

How? Weber’s electronic touch-n-go gas ignition system. It lights the charcoal (using propane) in under 5 minutes – all with the push of a button.

Aside from this one minor convenience difference, everything else is the same. Same sturdy wheels, same great warranty.

Weber Performer Reviews
Weber Performer Folded Side Table

Verdict: Weber Performer Charcoal Grill (found on Amazon) is Weber’s entry level Performer-series charcoal grill is a classic. It has all the same capabilities as it’s bigger brothers (the Premium & Deluxe version) with a few minor (and one major) difference. With the no-frills Performer, there’s no electronic touch-no-go gas ignition, no removable LCD cook timer, and the handle is slightly less thick than the Premium & Deluxe.

The biggest difference? The side table. Our personal preference? $150 extra (at the time of this post, prices may change) is worth the extra space. Having a larger side table makes a massive difference in every-day cooking quality of life. Without it? It’s too small.

Putting these differences aside, the Weber Performer acts as a staple Kettle grill for Weber. Sure, it’s a no-frills design, but it does the job, and well. If you want a charcoal grill with no bells & whistles that’s made in America, check the Performer out.

Weber Performer Deluxe vs Premium

Weber 15502001 Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill, 22-Inch, Copper vs Weber 15401001 Performer Premium Charcoal Grill, 22-Inch, Black, 0,

Comparing the Performer Deluxe vs Premium vs Performer (base) models can be confusing. We broke down all 3 models below side-by-side to make it easier to compare all the most important differences.

There’s only one important difference between the Performer Deluxe & Premium models. The electronic push start gas ignition system. Weber’s Performer Deluxe model combines the convenient of a gas grill with charcoal. How? By adding an electronic ignition powered by a gas propane tank. An easy push of a button, and your charcoal is completely heated in 5-7 minutes. It’s actually ridiculous how convenient this small difference makes over the course of a year. Sure, you can use a charcoal starter (like this one from Weber on Amazon), but we personally like this addition and we think it’s worth the $50 increase (price difference at the time of this post).

Weber Performer Deluxe vs Platinum (Discontinued)

Weber’s Performer Deluxe vs Platinum model is no longer really a discussion in 2018. Why? The Platinum is not only no longer in production, but it’s almost impossible to find online (especially in-stores). You might find an old model on Craigslist, but we don’t recommend it. The new 2015 edition Performer Deluxe is an improvement in almost every way.

The lid rests at a much better angle when opened, it’s a bit taller, has a metal table (which is a great upgrade), Weber’s new gourmet grill grate is a huge addition that’s hard to appreciate until you begin using it.

Weber Performer Deluxe Sale

"Performer Deluxe" Google Trends

The Weber Performer Deluxe rarely goes on sale. Evaluating interest over time on google trends shows us a few things. Interest peaks between June 18 – June 24th – Father’s Day. This is to be expected. It’s not completely foregone that there may be sales on Amazon and other online retailers, but there’s never a guarantee. Interest subsides until Labor Day (Sep. 3). Interest subsides again until the week after Black Friday. Keep all these things in mind when considering future sale prices for Weber’s Performer Deluxe.

The same general price trends for Weber’s Performer Deluxe follow suit with their Premium model. As such, sale trends are essentially the same, too. Click above & save the link if you want to revisit it for Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Labor Day, or Black Friday/Cyber Monday.
