How To Use American Express Gift Card On Amazon
Using your American Express gift card on Amazon is a little more tricky than other payment methods like Visa & Mastercard. Why? The simple fact that some retailers really don’t like American Express (including Amazon). So most don’t take them.
Even worse, Amazon has no mechanism in their payment services to accept split (multiple) payments from gift cards. In fact, you can’t even split payments on regular debit or credit cards! Because of this, if you use your American Express card and your Gift Card balance is lower than the purchase price, it will decline the charge. In other words, your Amex Gift Card balance must exceed the purchase price of your order, otherwise payment will fail.
The good news? There’s a few ways around this. We cover them below. Two to be exact.
The first scenario is if your Amex balance is greater than the order price. In this scenario the solution is pretty simple. The second scenario is a little more involved.
We cover both below.
1. Your Amex Balance Is Greater Than The Order Price
Make your purchase like any normal order
If your American Express card has enough balance on it to cover the total price of your order, enter your Amex card information like you would any other credit card. It’s really that simple. The tricky part involves Scenario 2 below.
2. Your Amex Balance Is Less Than The Order Price
Buying an Amazon E-Gift card is the fastest solution
If your American Express gift card doesn’t have enough funds on it for your purchase, it’s a little more tricky. Why? If you enter your Amex card information in checkout like in Scenario 1, the payment will fail. Amazon will try to charge the entire bill to your Amex card & it won’t process. Since your gift card balance is lower than the purchase amount, Amazon will decline the purchase.
The good news? There’s still an easy work around that involves buying an amazon gift card with your American Express gift card.
- Visit Amazon.com’s Gift Card page.
- Click on eGift on the left side.
- Pick a design.
- For “Amount“, type in the exact balance on your American Express gift card.
- Fill in the remaining details.
- For “Delivery Date” enter “Now“.
- Checkout and pay with your Amex gift card.
- In a few minutes, you should receive an email address saying someone sent you an Amazon gift card. Follow the email instructions & add the gift card to your Amazon account by visiting your Gift Card Balance page.
