Lets face it. Everyone isn’t a grilling expert. Some of us don’t know how to start a gas grill. That’s okay. Continue reading below. We’ll show you every step to starting your gas grill with perfection every time.
6 Things You'll Need
Step 1 - Grill Lid Safety
Starting a gas grill always begins with lifting the grill lid. Lifting the grill lid is not only the first step, it’s the most important step. If you don’t lift the lid, bad things can happen. You risk highly dangerous gas buildup. If gas builds up in large enough amounts? You risk an explosion. That’s right. There’s over 7,000 gas grill fires every year, according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). Don’t allow gas to build up in the closed cooking chamber.
Pro Tip: Always keep your grill at least 3 – 5 feet away from your house. Why? In the rare event of a fire, it doesn’t spread.
Step 2 - Ignition
If your grill is fueled by liquid propane, you’ll see a gas turn off valve on the top. Turn it counter clockwise to open the valve. Continue twisting until it no longer turns. If your grill has an igniter button, simply turn the burners all the way up. Push the ignition button once all the burners are on high. If your grill doesn’t have an ignition button? Simple. You have 2 options. Use a long fireplace match or lighter wand.
Step 3 - Heat Prep
Once all burners are lit, close the lid and allow 5-10 minutes for the temperature to reach 500 – 550 degrees. Don’t adjust anything yet for cooking. Wait until the grill fully heats.
Step 4 - The Wait...
If your grill doesn’t have a temperature gauge, heat for 15-20 minutes on high. Don’t cook anything yet. 15-20 minutes is up? Good – now you can begin cooking. Turn the temperature down to medium and throw your food on. We strongly recommend using an accurate temperature gauge in this step. We recommend Dilliss’s Instant Read Meat Thermometer.
Note: If your grill is not getting hot enough (only reaching temps of 250-300 degrees) you may have a tripped regulator. The good news? This problem is quite common, so it’s an easy fix. Plain English; the regular became wonky at some point & it’s restricting gas flow to the burner. The result? Mild heat even on high temperature settings. Do these 4 things:
- Disconnect the regular from the tank and wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the regular to the propane tank.
- Slowly open the propane tank valve knob all the way.
- Relight the grill as before with your automatic ignition, matches, or lighter wand.
Step 5 - Winding Down
When you’re done cooking, turn the burner knobs completely off. Next, turn the gas completely off (clockwise) at the tank. Step 6 - Cleanup
This is the best time to clean the cooking grate while it’s still warm. Most people recommend waiting until the grill cools. While it’s a sound recommendation in theory, you need a warm grill if you want to scrape off stuck on food. Don’t be lazy. A warm grill makes removing stuck on food 10x easier.
